The annual Destination Gatronomique winter wine festival takes place in the historic arsenal of the Citadelle of Montreuil sur Mer on 7th and 8th December 2109.
Just six euros gets you a tasting glass and a chance to try all manner of wines (sparkling, organic, bio dynamic) from all over France and the world. Meet the wine makers, while trying their finest wines and pair them with interesting local delicacies. There are also local beers and spirits to try. Included with the six euros tasting fee is free entrance to the magnificent Citadelle, with guided tours (in English at selected times-see below). Once you’ve identified your favourites, there’s chance to buy excellent wines at sensible prices ready for Christmas and New Year.
Montreuil sur Mer is just a 45 minute drive from Calais and Folkestone, straight down the A16 motorway (3€ toll each way). There are a range of hotels for all budgets if you want to make a weekend of it, most within an easy walk of the Citadelle. The Winter Wine Festival tastings run from 10am to 6pm on Saturday and 10am to 4pm on Sunday. Guided tours are at 11am, 3pm and 6pm on Saturday (11am in English) and 11am and 3pm on Sunday (3pm in English).
For anyone wanting to make a truly memorable weekend, there are limited spaces at a celebratory dinner with the wine makers, pairing their wines with some magnificent dishes from the teams at the celebrated restaurants of Anecdote and the Hotel Hermitage. Places are 115 euros each, reservations close on the 30 November.
